Marine Lanier, unbound by traditional notions of documentary realism, crafts a distinctive personal iconography, characterised by a bold aesthetic. Her techniques using the frame, close-up shots, monochrome-filtered portraits, diffused lighting and intriguing light-dark contrasts yield visuals that evoke a dreamlike quality, rich in narrative possibilities.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY MARINE LANIER TEXT BY ESRA YILMAZ
The series, Le Jardin d’Hannibal, highlighted in this issue, is set in a botanical research garden on the Lautaret Pass, where Hannibal is believed to have crossed the Alps. Over several months, Marine Lanier accompanied researchers, students and gardeners, as they studied how biodiversity changes and adapts, during this critical phase of climate change. Inspired by early pioneers who photographed living organisms, Lanier creates a distinctive photographic herbarium that sketches a surreal outline of tomorrow’s ecosystem.
